Housing

Sean Patrick McCoy Ward 6 Missoula Montana HousingThere is no single solution to the housing crisis. It demands a comprehensive and collaborative approach. State tax policies, inflation, tariffs, material shortages, workforce gaps, infrastructure deficits, and gentrification all shape our local housing market. Addressing housing means confronting each of these interconnected challenges.

One of the consequences of growth is a lack of affordable housing. We can address this by reforming our building codes to provide a flexible, formulaic model for both developers and homeowners to follow. I fully support Missoula’s ongoing building code update and will work to ensure it is effective. I will also push for amendments whenever it seems appropriate.

We must also continue creating and strengthening our relationships with public and private organizations that focus on affordable housing. Many valuable resources go untapped. By collaborating with other municipalities facing the same challenges, we can create a stronger, unified voice at the state and national levels, particularly to secure more funding for infrastructure.

Our community must remain committed to the vision outlined in our policies: fair, sustainable, and environmentally responsible solutions. We can build new homes while preserving neighborhood character. That is why I am running for City Council, to fight for that balance on your behalf.

Infrastructure is one of Missoula’s biggest housing challenges. As Chair of the Missoula Consolidated Planning Board, I have seen projects move forward without the infrastructure needed to support them. Until we redirect more state and federal investment toward infrastructure, we will continue to face this gap.

Missoula deserves a housing strategy that works for everyone. By modernizing our codes, building stronger partnerships, investing in infrastructure, and keeping our policies rooted in fairness and sustainability, we can create a future where every resident has the opportunity to live in a safe, affordable home. I am committed to leading that effort and making it a reality for our community.
